Management Development

We were asked by a client to design and deliver some training for 19 Supervisors who had differing levels of prior experience and development. The core objective of the programme was to equip the Supervisors with the enhanced knowledge, skill, ability and confidence to handle various typical supervisory challenges.

We called the programme Essential Supervision reflecting the content of the programme and also the fact that the quality of supervisors in a business has a huge impact on productivity and performance. Our design was made up of three short modules all focussing on developing interpersonal relationships and how to manage those relationships in different situations.

Module 1 was called "Effective Communication" and introduced different aspects of communication such as questionning and listening, body language etc. It also dealt with assertiveness from the perspective of how someone's beliefs and attitudes impact their behaviour. We argue that this is more productive than focussing on assertiveness skills or techniques - without the confidence or will to apply them the techniques are useless!

Module 2 was called "Meeting the Supervisory Challenge" and covered conflict handling, influencing and giving good feedback. These areas were designed to build on the content from module 1 and were then applied to Handling Discipline, Absence and Staff Selection situations.

Module 3 was called "Understanding Change". It introduced the emotions people naturally feel when going through a period of change and it examined how to work with people at different stages of the change process. We also covered aspects of individual motivation and the concept of empowerment to investigate how to gain peoples' buy-in to change.

The learning in each module was reinforced with a blend of self-awareness questionnaires, theory input, skills practice, group reflection and action planning.
