Selection Interviewing Skills

A client asked us to put together a workshop to help first line supervisors and departmental managers improve the way they manage the recruitment process. The emphasis was on improving their interviewing skills, but we felt it was important to also encourage the delegates to take more ownership for managing the whole process (they used to rely on HR to run the process for them).

Our solution

We designed a two day workshop to cover the whole recruitment process from defining what the ideal candidate looks like through to making a decision on who to employee.

Day 1 is about defining the ideal candidate, sourcing candidates, assessing candidates, screening applications and preparing for interview. Day 2 is about practicing interviewing, making the selection decision and considering what happens after the decision has been made.

There are several aspects that make this programme especially powerful:

  • delegates define their own person specification
  • delegates select 3 interviewees from several applications against the person specification they defined
  • we use professional role players to play the part of three interviewees
  • we use video to allow the delegates to review their interview performance
  • delegates make a decision on which of the three interviewees to recruit

Each of these things increases the realism of the training and maximises the learning.

This programme was so successful that we have now developed an open version of the programme called Making Successful Recruitment Decisions.
